Andy Warhol made art out of soup cans, celebrity photographs and silkscreen repetition, and in doing so changed what art was allowed to be about. His New York studio, the Factory, became the centre of a whole cultural scene.

- He nearly failed his first year and was admitted to the second only on condition that he take summer classes.
- He started out as a commercial illustrator drawing shoes for magazines, and was among the best-paid in New York before he was a fine artist.
- The Andy Warhol Museum in his home city of Pittsburgh is the largest museum in North America devoted to a single artist.
